To be a “professional” at your current job requires three things:

First:  A complete knowledge of that job; its requirements, any special tools required for the performance of the job, and any special skills required to use those tools.

Second:  The ability to use the knowledge and tools reference above, including any specialized schooling required.

Third:  The determination and desire to do the job to the best of your ability at all times and under all circumstances.

The above will satisfy the requirements for the label of “professional”.  But to be truly successful in any line of work that involves contact with people, one more thing is absolutely required, and that is the correct attitude.

The correct attitude is what brings customers back.  It is what will cause them to overlook minor setbacks.  It will encourage them to recommend you and your business to their friends.  It will cause them to think of you as more than a service provider, but also as a friend.

And what is the correct attitude?  It is that the customer is not just a cash cow, but the reason that you are able to make a living.  It is that the customer is not a nameless, faceless check writer, or credit card user, but also a real person with the same type of triumphs and failures that you experience.  In other words, the customer is you on the other side of the counter.

Therefore, treat the customer as well as you treat yourself, and , possibly, even better.  Begin each contact with a smile, both inside and outside.  Exhibit an interest in the customer and his or her life.  Make eye contact whenever you communicate.  Listen when they talk, and reply when questioned.  It is important that each customer feel as though their business is important and necessary to the success of your business; but, more importantly, that the provider feels privileged to extend the service that the customer is purchasing.

The customer is not always right, but they are always the customer.  Align your thinking with that in mind.

I would like to state at this point, that in sending this message to the owners and staff of Bentley and Stevens, I am preaching to the choir.  It has been my pleasure to be a customer of your organization for many years, and I will state that this is, without a doubt, the most efficient, skillful, and friendly group of people I have ever had the privilege to do business with.
